About

Associate Professor Anthony Lynham is a highly experienced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and senior medical leader with over 25 years of specialist clinical practice and extensive expertise in medico-legal consultancy, trauma assessment, governance, and health system review.

He has held long-standing appointments as a Visiting Medical Officer in tertiary hospitals including The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and maintains active private specialist practice. His clinical expertise spans maxillofacial trauma, complex reconstructive surgery, surgical standards of care, and outcomes assessment. He was for many years the Head Examiner for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for Australia and New Zealand. He is currently a Specialist Consultant to the Jamieson Trauma Institute and serves on multiple senior medical advisory and regulatory bodies, including the Queensland Audit of Surgical Mortality Steering Committee and the Medicare Professional Services Review.

Professor Lynham brings a rare combination of front-line surgical expertise, health system governance, regulatory insight, and public policy leadership, having served as a Queensland Government Minister from 2014 to 2020 with responsibility for major infrastructure, resources, and statutory authorities. He has chaired and served on numerous boards across health, insurance, utilities, and government-owned corporations, including WorkCover Queensland.

His medico-legal work is informed by:

  • Experience in audit, mortality review, accreditation, and professional conduct
  • Expertise in trauma systems, injury causation, and long-term functional outcomes
  • Strong familiarity with legal, regulatory, and evidentiary frameworks

Professor Lynham has held senior roles in surgical training, accreditation, and examination nationally and internationally, and has been responsible for assessing professional performance standards. He has published peer-reviewed research in advanced imaging and trauma reconstruction and has secured major competitive research grants.

He is known for providing clear, independent, and defensible expert opinions, with an ability to translate complex medical and surgical issues into language accessible to legal practitioners, insurers, and courts.

Dento-alveolar surgery, wisdom teeth, facial trauma and reconstruction, bone grafting and oro-facial pathology.
